我从未爱过这世界，
它对我也一样；

我没有阿谀过它腐臭的气息，
也不曾忍从地屈膝，
膜拜它的各种偶像；

我没有在脸上堆着笑，
更没有高声叫嚷着，
崇拜一种回音；

纷纭的世人不能把我看作他们一伙；
我站在人群中却不属于他们；

也没有把头脑放进
那并非而又算作他们的思想的尸衣中，
一齐列队行进，
因此才被压抑而至温顺。

我没有爱过这世界，它对我也一样——
但是，尽管彼此敌视，
让我们方方便便分手吧；

虽然我自己不曾看到，
在这世上我相信或许会有不骗人的希望，
真实的语言，
也许还有些美德，
它们的确怀有仁心，
并不给失败的人安排陷阱；

我还这样想：
当人们伤心的时候，
有些人真的在伤心，
有那么一两个，
几乎就是所表现的那样——

I have not loved the world, nor the world me;
I have not flatter’d its rank breath, nor bow’d
To its idolatries a patient knee, —
Nor coin’d my cheek to smiles, — nor cried aloud
In worship of an echo; in the crowd
They could not deem me one of such; I stood
Among them, but not of them; in a shroud
Of thoughts which were not their thoughts, and still could,
Had I not filed my mind, which thus itself subdued.

I have not loved the world, nor the world me, —
But let us part fair foes; I do believe,
Though I have found them not, that there may be
Words which are things, — hopes which will not deceive,
And virtues which are merciful, nor weave
Snares for the failing: I would also deem
O’er others’ griefs that some sincerely grieve;
That two, or one, are almost what they seem, —
That goodness is no name, and happiness no dream.
