看到这么些肤色各异的朋友来到杭州，着实让我们找到点民族自信，就一时兴起想用英语把杭州介绍一番。几个人面红耳赤、搜肠刮肚，恨不得把自己心掏空也掏不出几个有价值的单词和句子。比方简单的东坡肉、西湖醋鱼、青团，我朋友只会用汉语和手势在那里滔滔不停，因为Matt刚来杭州半年（即使这样，汉语水平也令人咂舌的），自己也不知道这些食物。这一堂课我们是在谈中国食物的英语表达。

翻译这些食物是需要点脑细胞的，唉唉，多说点英语也能让我这生锈的脑子开开窍。Matt教我们的这些全部是生活中经常用到的。虽然不能包罗万象，但是足够我们出国后饿不死，也足够你帮你的外国朋友介绍中国食物之用。

我肯定你经常吃到如下这些vegetable：

Carrot 胡萝卜、Tomato 蕃茄、Eggplant茄子、 Cabbage 卷心菜、 Onion 洋葱、Chilly 辣椒、Green Pepper青椒、 Red pepper红椒、Cucumber 黄瓜、Pumpkin南瓜、Lettuce 生菜、bean 豆、Pea豌豆

你经常吃的seafood也无非是这些吧：

Crab 螃蟹、Prawn 虾、Shrimps 基围虾、Lobster 龙虾 、Peeled Prawns 虾仁、 King Prawns 大虾、Oyster 牡蛎

我们再说一下你每天吃的meat:

Beef 牛肉、Pork 猪肉、Chicken 鸡肉、Fish鱼、Turkey 火鸡、duck 鸭
加上几个操作方便、经常用到的pastry和snack：

知道了这些，如果再来说中国食物，其实也挺simple，中国菜的一种翻译方法跟它的制作方式密切相关。比如红烧肉 Braised Pork，东坡肉也就可以说成是Braised Dongpo Pork ，霉干菜扣肉 Steamed Sliced Pork With Vegetable。类似的还有西红柿炒鸡蛋Stir-fried Tomato and Eggs 、炒米粉Stir-fried Rice Noodles、清炒西兰花Stir-fried broccoli 、油条Fried bread 韭菜盒Fried leek dumplings 、水饺Boiled dumplings 、蒸饺Steamed dumplings 、馒头Steamed bread 、北京烤鸭 Roasted Beijing duck
像是西湖醋鱼的翻译方法就有点直译的感觉——West Lake Vinegar Fish 西湖醋鱼，类似的还有酸辣汤Sweet & Sour Soup 、蛋饼Egg Cakes、红豆糕Red Bean Cakes 、 糯米糕Glutinous Rice Cakes、 馄饨汤Wonton Soup、 Spring roll 春卷、 饭团Rice and vegetable roll。

最后我加几句跟食物有关的习语和对话：

the apple of one’s eye：掌上明珠

例：He is the apple of his father’s eye.

a small potato：无足轻重的小人物

例：He is a a small potato in my classroom.
a big fish：（小地方的）大人物

例：He is a big fish in his town.

a piece of cake小菜一碟

例：It’s a piece of cake.

go bananas：发疯例：They go bananas.

braed and water：简单的生活

例：They live on braed and water.
